Walks Along the Wales Coastal Path – February 2025, with its periods of glorious sunshine following the bitterly cold winds and freezing temperatures of January, has highlighted just how serious the impact of climate change is.

A Surge in Interest

The early spring has resulted in a surge in interest in fitness activities, such as walking, running and swimming in coastal areas, rivers and lakes. Many places in Britain have developed designated routes and pathways to encourage individuals and groups to participate safely.

Following on from this, Paddy Dillon’s motivational and practical Llwybr Arfordir Cymru/The Wales Coastal Path provides details of 57 stages of walks on the continuous paths running across the magnificent coastline of Wales.

Clearly labelled maps and a range of excellent photographs enhance Paddy’s easy-to-follow route guides and descriptors. In addition, he unravels key features of social history, landscape and geological issues such as mining and erosion, which stimulate interest and put “meat on the bones” of the routes.

Paddy breaks each walk down into clearly delineated stages to include key details of distance, ascent, terrain and assessed time, while additional essentials reference travel, refreshments and accommodation.

Outstanding Scenery

Those readers who have traversed some stages or parts of the llwybyr (path) will be aware of the outstanding scenery, extensive views,  beaches, cliffs and rocky coves, which the beauty of wildlife trees, flowers and the tranquillity of nature and sea life in abundance enhances even further.

The easily accessed walks range from Chester to Flint, Prestatyn to Colwyn Bay or Colwyn Bay to Conwy and will whet the enthusiasm of walkers to try more extensive travel or even make short stays. They can then take advantage of the magnificent additional walks in areas like Pen Llyn (Llyn Peninsular), Meironnydd and Ceredigion.

Readers will appreciate the addition of the appendices, which include a route summary table and a Welsh language glossary of keywords and phrases to support non-Welsh speaking walkers in their travels across the Welsh-speaking heartlands of Pen Llyn, Meironnydd, Ceredigion and Sir Fon (Anglesey).
