Nightingale House Hospice had a particularly busy March, announcing the introduction of a new carer programme and also receiving a much-needed donation from a charity event featuring comedy legend Les Dennis.

Les Dennis Charity Event

Over 100 people attended the fundraiser, organised by the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting in association with Hotel Wrexham. It took an in-depth look at the career of one of the UK small screen’s most famous stars.

An Exclusive Q&A

Fans packed the venue and heard an exclusive Q&A with Les which documented the highs and lows of his career spanning 50 years.

“We were proud to partner with the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting for an event that has raised funds for a critical local service. It was a fantastic evening, thoroughly entertaining from the outset and packed with laughs – just like Les’s career!” said Steven Hesketh, co-owner of Hotel Wrexham.

He continued, “We’ve committed to helping local charities and good causes wherever we can. We feel that this is not just part of our ethos as a company but our responsibility to the local community. This event is one of many that is raising funds for projects and charities that do vital work for Wrexham and the surrounding areas.

An Unforgettable Evening

Sarah Povey, Corporate & Donor Relationships Manager at Nightingale House, added, “On behalf of everyone at Nightingale House Hospice, I would like to express our thanks to the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting and Hotel Wrexham for organising such an unforgettable evening

“We were thrilled to be chosen as the beneficiary for this event. The funds raised will have a significant impact on the care we provide to our patients and their families, and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of everyone involved.”

New Carer Support Programme

Nightingale House Hospice has launched a new Carer Support Programme to provide vital help and respite for carers looking after loved ones with life-limiting and progressive illnesses.

Immense Challenge

Recognising the immense challenges carers face, including financial hardship, isolation, and the impact on their own health, the Wrexham hospice has designed a group to offer a much-needed break while their loved ones attend well-being sessions.

Julie Jones, Senior Social Worker at Nightingale House Hospice, explained, “Our intention for the group is to allow carers a much-needed break whilst their loved ones are safely attending our wellbeing sessions here at the hospice.  One of the barriers for carers attending a support group is that they feel unable to leave their loved ones. By running the carers’ group at the same time as our Wellbeing Programme sessions, we remove that challenge and create an opportunity for them to focus on themselves.”

The sessions offer a safe and welcoming space where carers can connect with others in similar situations. This reduces isolation and encourages peer support. They also provide practical guidance. This guidance includes signposting carers to key services like Northeast Wales Carers Information Service and Citizens Advice Bureau.

A Huge Difference

Julie added: “There are numerous benefits for carers. Primarily, it helps them realise they are not alone. Being able to share experiences, advice, and resources with others in a similar position is invaluable. Even something as simple as getting out of the house for a couple of hours can make a huge difference.”

“Our programme offers support. Each meeting is shaped by the carers themselves, ensuring they receive support that is relevant to their needs. Topics covered include carers’ rights, community support, and also financial assistance. We also cover self-care and legal matters such as wills and lasting power of attorney.

Julie emphasised the importance of recognising the incredible role carers play. She says, “Carers provide an extremely valuable service, especially those looking after loved ones with life-limiting illnesses. Carers help their loved ones to maintain their independence and the best health possible. It’s a physically and emotionally demanding role. If we don’t support carers, they risk burnout. This could also ultimately lead to people losing the ability to remain at home.”

A Six-Week Programme

The Carer Support Programme is open to anyone in a caring role who has a loved one connected to Nightingale House Hospice. Sessions take place as a six-week programme on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 1 to 3pm.
