Look to the left to see this pretty lake. Wrexham Walks – Borras And Golf Club

In the latest of our walks around Wrexham, we explore the area east of Gresford, specifically the vicinity of the quarry, the golf club, Borras, and the Flash. There’s something for everyone on the route. We walk across lush meadows, along manicured paths and quiet country lanes.

The route is about six miles long and should take you around 2¾ to 3 hours to complete. The total ascent is approximately 382 feet (116 meters), with the highest point reaching 264 feet (80 meters).

“Pre-Amble”

You’ll be walking along easy-to-follow tracks for a lot of the way, although the woodland path just before the golf course is a little overgrown. There were a couple of fields with cows in them. There are a few stiles to cross, some of which you might have to lift a dog over. The final section requires you to walk along country lanes for approximately one mile.

Starting Point

I started off at Commonwood Fisheries. There’s a large car park there and you have the added bonus of being able to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink there afterwards – they have a fully-licensed bar!

Their address is Buck Road, Holt LL13 9TF, and you can find them at what3words.com/reaction.wordplay.bead.

Head away from Wrexham on the A534, either via the A483 and A5156 or out of the city on Stryt Holt. On the golf club/Morrissons Daily roundabout, follow the signs for Holt, Nantwich and the industrial estate. At the next roundabout after about ¾ mile, take the second exit onto Wrexham Road, following the signs for Holt and Nantwich. Turn left after another ¾ mile, just before Hotel Wrexham, onto Shepherds Road. Turn left into Commonwood Fisheries, about half a mile along – by this point, Shepherds Road has turned into Buck Road.

Walk Directions

Buck Road

Park up and exit the fisheries (1) back onto Buck Road.

Look right and you’ll see a green metal public footpath post about 25 yards along the road. Follow the arrow to the right and proceed through the metal gate. Walk along the grassy path for a few yards into the next field. Follow the left-hand hedge, fence and tree line until you reach the corner of the field. Walk along the grassy path in front and slightly to the left of you to exit the field.

You’ll enter another field with portaloos to your right. Keep following the hedge line on your right and leave this field by taking another grassy corridor similar to the last field in the corner ahead of you. The path leads to a metal kissing gate and into another field. This one is pretty large. You’ll see Borras Wood to your right and a large white house ahead. You’ll probably hear pheasants around this point.

Follow the left fence line up the slight slope and keep heading in the same direction as this fence line angles away from you. Exit the field through the metal kissing gate in the hedge line ahead of you.

Borras Hall Lane

Turn left once on Borras Hall Lane and walk along it for about a minute. Borras Hall and Borras Hall Court are on your right – make a note of that because you’ll be coming through this metal kissing gate again in the opposite direction on your way back.

Be careful as there’s no pavement or grass verge. Hop over the stile next to the metal gate on the right and walk the short distance across the field using the “permissive path”. Go through the metal kissing gate and climb the bank in front of you. You’ll a wooden post with the yellow arrow maymarker on the green disc.

Turn left to walk along the top of a bank through an area of woodland. A large diameter black pipe runs alongside you to your right. Step over the pipe to the right just after a sign that says “Caution Pipe” (2) and you’ll find you’re entering an area of mown grass surrounding a red-brick office building.

Burnt-Out Wooden Frame

Walk to the left to the silver birch standing alone on the grass to the left of the building (3) and take the path running through the narrow strip of woodland beyond.

3. Head for the silver birch to the left
3. Head for the silver birch to the left

The path bends round to the right, so you’re walking along the end of the office building to your right. You walk past another much smaller outbuilding on your right – this one rather dilapidated.

As the path leaves the woodland, scale the bank ahead and head for the burnt-out wooden frame in front of you and slightly to the left. Walk around the left of the structure (4).

Scan ahead to notice the wooden three/four-bar fence. Cross the two flat concrete areas, heading for a gap in a line of three trees just before the fence (a conifer, a silver birch and another one). You’ll see a metal gate in the fence just beyond the trees. This gate leads onto a road, which leads down to Borras Quarry on your left.

Wrexham Golf Club

Please take care crossing, as there is a lot of heavy vehicle traffic using the road. Go through the gate on the other side, walk across the mown area and aim for the path with the long grass on either side, which is ahead of you and to the left. This path leads into some woodland and takes you through the middle of really dense bushes, nettles, etc. After about four minutes, the path bends 90° to the right. You’ll see the fairways of Wrexham Golf Club to your left. This next section was a little overgrown, and I used my knee-length gaiters to protect my legs from the nettles.

After another four minutes, the path sends you left through a green metal kissing gate onto the edge of the fairway you’ve been walking along (5).

5. Walk through the green gate to the left

The golf club fairways stretch out majestically on either side in front of you. Waiting for the opportune moment, head diagonally left to the right of the short white post with the yellow top. You should see a wooden post with a yellow arrow waymarker lying on the ground before you cross. Walk through the line of trees to the right of the post and turn right. Head for the blue concrete sign on the ground, which says, “Buggy Path This Way”. Follow the gravel path until it finishes. Walk diagonally right across the next fairway, aiming for the left side of the pin with the white flag.

Seventh Hole

As you approach the pin, work your way across to the trees on the left-hand side. Walk along the gravel path, following the arrow on the “7th Tee This Way” sign. Take the left fork (the one with the metal handrail). At the bottom of the slope, turn right and keep following the gravel path – you’ll see the clubhouse behind you to your left. Pass the pond to your left and walk straight on as the path finishes at the 7th-hole description sign (6).

6. Carry straight on here

Pass the yellow- and red-topped white posts ahead to the right of the fairway. Take the gravel path ahead. Carry straight on as the path bends round to the right after a few yards. Take the gravel path you see ahead of you between the teeing-off areas. You should pass a wooden post with a yellow arrow waymarker. Walk between the two groups of trees ahead of you, following the right-hand edge of the fairway.

Gresford Quarry

You’ll arrive at another fairway which runs across you. Look directly ahead, and you’ll see a gap in the far hedgerow. Head for this and use the green metal walker’s gate to exit the golf course. Follow the path through another patch of dense vegetation and walk up the slope to the metal gate, which takes you onto Borras Road.

Cross straight over and go through the metal kissing gate into a field. Walk straight on and you’ll see a wooden kissing gate dead ahead that leads you into a short field with a slope up a steepish bank. Go up the slope straight on and exit the field through a metal kissing gate onto Barker’s Lane. Cross straight over and go through the wooden kissing gate onto a mile-long track leading around the western side of Gresford Quarry.

You start along a narrowish grassy track with a high hedgerow on your left and a barbed-wire-topped fence on your right. You’ll then get some great views on both sides. Don’t miss the small lake to your left about three minutes (7).

Vicarage Lane and Carthegena Lane

The Flash and the Pant yr Ochain are about half a mile beyond the lake. The path you’re on is easy to follow and takes you through several gateless wooden gateways and along the edge of a field for a short distance.

After about 20 to 25 minutes, you’ll start to spot the houses of Gresford ahead, and you walk to the left of some large gardens behind hedges before emerging onto Vicarage Lane. Turn right and walk along the lane for about three minutes before turning right onto Carthagena Lane for about seven minutes. Ignore the private road signs. Hop over the stile in the wooden gate with the yellow arrow waymarker to the right of the large house (8).

A Perfect Picnic Spot

Turn left once over the stile and follow the left-hand hedge and tree line with the shiny black plastic fencing to your left. Carry on along this hedgerow and slip through a gap in the hedge to the left in the far corner. Turn immediately right, following the yellow waymarker arrow. You’ll come out into an open area with a pretty lake in front of you – perfect for a picnic (9).

Turn left and go through the metal gate into the woods. Follow the path to the right for around three to four minutes. Exit the woodland area through a metal gate and turn left. Aim for the left of the distinctive two-poled pylon (10), which is just after a stile without a fence and a pond.

10. Walk to the left of the double pole pylon

Hop over the stile to the right of the metal gate and then go through a metal walker’s gate to the left of a metal vehicle gate. Take care when using the bolt to open the gate, as it’s a bit loose and may shoot out, ending up on the ground.

Retrace Your Steps

Follow the path past the garden on your left. It twists and turns for a few minutes before you come out onto Borras Road again. Turn left and then right onto Borras Hall Road after about six minutes. Walk along the lane for just under 15 minutes or just over half a mile, and turn left through the metal kissing gate just past Borras Hall Court and Borras Hall that you went through at the beginning of the walk.

Retrace your steps through the three fields and turn left to reach the fisheries once you return to Buck Lane.

Congratulations! You’ve completed the walk!
