It’s coming home… again! The 2025 tournament drew capacity crowds and international players. The Lexus Wrexham Open will return to North Wales this year following the outstanding success of the largest women’s tennis tournament – outside the grass-court season – to take place in the UK in 2025.
Top-Tier Tennis
The ITF World Tennis Tour event, hosted at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, brought top-tier international tennis to the city in October and drew enthusiastic support from start to finish.
The week-long tournament attracted British and overseas players, with crowds steadily building before culminating in a packed finals day. More than 600 spectators filled the venue to watch an all-British singles showdown that saw Welsh talent Mimi Xu crowned singles champion (see feature image). The 18-year-old from Swansea rounded off a remarkable week by clinching the doubles title as well, partnering Ella McDonald to victory.
Dave Courteen
Last year marked the first time the prestigious event had taken place in Wrexham, replacing the Lexus W100 Shrewsbury in the LTA Performance Competitions Calendar. Tournament promoter Dave Courteen described the move as a resounding success and confirmed the event will return from October 18–25 this year.

“We are proud to announce that the Lexus Wrexham Open will be returning next year,” he said. “It has quickly become established in the city, with the local community showing fantastic enthusiasm for the tournament and the other events we held alongside it during a busy and enjoyable week. We saw higher attendances than the tournament has ever attracted before, and that helped make it an incredible success.”
Ultimate Fairytale
Dave also paid tribute to the organisations and individuals who made the event possible. “We are hugely grateful to Tennis Wales, Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government for their support, which has been first class,” he noted. He praised staff and volunteers at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, alongside local schoolchildren who formed the ball crew. The business community also played its part, with “so many businesses keen to be involved.”
“For it all to finish with Mimi Xu’s brilliant success as a Welsh player was the ultimate fairytale ending to a fantastic week,” he added.
Rising British Stars
The Lexus Wrexham Open was the highest-level tennis tournament to take place in Wales for almost 30 years, since the Rover British Clay Court Championships in Cardiff in 1996. Iain Bates, the LTA’s head of women’s tennis, spent much of the week in Wrexham and praised both the organisation and the impact on rising British stars.

“From a British tennis perspective, the Lexus Wrexham Open was a great success,” Bates said, noting the value of events that help young players transition into the senior game. With strong British performances across singles and doubles, he said the week offered “everything we want these events to be for our player group.”
