Members gathered in the Rose Garden at Erddig for the WNTA 50th anniversary – Wrexham National Trust Association Celebrates 50 Years Supporting Erddig

For half a century, the Wrexham National Trust Association has raised funds to restore and preserve Erddig. This summer, its members celebrated in style.

On Friday 26 June 2026, the Wrexham National Trust Association (WNTA) marked 50 years of dedication to Erddig. It held an evening of celebration in the Rose Garden, and nearly 100 members attended.

An Evening in the Rose Garden

Guests enjoyed canapés and a glass of fizz (see feature image). Meanwhile, renowned plantsman and garden designer Stephen Lacey gave a most enjoyable talk as guest speaker.

Members also went behind the scenes in the Chinese and Tapestry Rooms. They also viewed a display of items conserved through WNTA funding.

How It All Began

The story began when the last squire, Philip Yorke III, showed Leta Jones around Erddig. At the time, the house was still unrestored. Afterwards, she asked friends how they could raise money to help with the restoration.

As a result, the first event took place in March 1976. It was a coffee morning in the Wrexham Memorial Hall. Philip gave the opening speech and expressed his delight in the project to save Erddig.

More Than £100,000 Raised

The Memorial Hall coffee morning soon became an annual event. Over time, coach outings, the Autumn Talks and an annual dinner joined the calendar. By 1988, the WNTA was the third-highest fundraiser for the National Trust in England and Wales.

To date, the association has donated over £100,000 to projects at Erddig. These include restoring the Victorian clock, the gates on the West Front and the Victorian greenhouses. The WNTA also funded the recreation of the thatched Victoria Playhouse.

Most recently, its donation bought two mobility scooters. Now, more visitors can explore the gardens and the ground floor of the house.

The Work Continues

Fundraising continues today with summer trips, plus Summer and Christmas lunches. The Autumn Talks also run on the second Tuesday of each month from October to March. They take place at St John’s Church Hall, Herbert Jennings Avenue, Wrexham.

Many WNTA members also volunteer at Erddig. Over the last half century, they have recognised the importance of Philip Yorke’s gift of his unique home to the National Trust. They will continue to support his remarkable legacy.
