New Walking Tennis Sessions for Those Living With Parkinson's

Carden Park Hotel is backing the Lexus Wrexham Open this October. Meaning more fans will get to watch world-class tennis in North Wales. Meanwhile, Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre has launched a new walking tennis project for those living with Parkinson’s.

A New Sponsor, More Seats for Fans

The award-winning hotel will sponsor the main arena at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre for the first time. Consequently, organisers have increased court-side stadium seating to 700 seats. The ITF World Tennis Tour event returns to Wrexham between October 18 and 25. Also, rising Welsh star Mimi Xu will defend her title from last year.

As part of the new partnership, Carden Park also hosted the tournament’s first Ultimate Tennis Ball. Notably, it raised more than £1,000 for The Tennis Foundation. Tournament promoter Dave Courteen called Carden Park the leading hospitality venue in the region. He added that it offers further evidence of the tournament’s impact within the local community last year.

Dan Gibson, Sales Director at Carden Park Hotel, said the sponsorship supports the hotel’s wider sports strategy. Therefore, tickets are now on sale for the October event. Also, demand is already building following last year’s success.

Walking Tennis Welcomes Parkinson’s Community

People living with Parkinson’s in Wrexham and the surrounding areas are being invited to try a new walking tennis project. Sessions launched on Thursday 9th July, running 10am to 11am at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre on Plas Coch Road.

Delivered by the centre, the weekly sessions introduce walking tennis in a fun, social setting. Experienced instructors cover the basics, and all equipment is provided. Furthermore, all ages and abilities are welcome. Carers and relatives can join in or simply watch over tea and coffee.

Benefits of walking tennis for people with Parkinson’s include improved balance, coordination and strength. Better memory and social interaction feature too. Rob Ward, Programme Manager at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, said the sessions offer a great opportunity to get active at your own pace. Most importantly, he added, participants get to socialise with people over a coffee or tea. For more information, call 01978 265 260 or email [email protected].

Carden Park’s growing involvement reflects a broader ambition to become an internationally recognised sports hotel. Gibson said the partnership marks just one step in that wider strategy, with further sporting sponsorships likely to follow in the coming years. Consequently, Wrexham’s tennis scene looks set to benefit from continued investment well beyond this year’s tournament.

For those more interested in playing than watching, walking tennis offers a different route into the sport altogether. The programme’s low-pressure, sociable format has proven popular with similar community groups elsewhere in Wales. Therefore, organisers hope the Wrexham sessions will follow a similar path, growing steadily as word spreads among the local Parkinson’s community and their families.
