Caring for Our Skin as We Age

Taking proper care of your skin during middle age is crucial for maintaining its health as you age.

Top Tips for Skincare

As we age, our skin undergoes changes. It can become drier, duller, less elastic, and more prone to wrinkles and age spots. Here are my tips for maintaining skin in optimal condition throughout middle age and beyond.

(1) Moisturise daily

Choose an oil-based moisturiser rather than a water-based one to help keep your skin hydrated and protect against fine lines and wrinkles.

(2) Protect your skin

A daily SPF is essential to protect against sun damage, as 80% of all visible signs of ageing are directly linked to UV exposure. Yes, even when it’s dull outside! It’s the single biggest piece of advice I give to people who want their skin to be healthy and look good into old age.

(3) Use a gentle, oil-based cleanser

Avoid harsh soaps, which can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Instead, look for cleansers that use natural oils such as jojoba as a base (the closest oil to those produced naturally by our skin). Oil-based cleansers are gentler on the skin, helping to keep it balancedclean, and nourished simultaneously (and before you ask, no, they won’t make your skin greasy!).

(4) Exfoliate

Exfoliation is another important step in caring for middle-aged skin. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, which can make skin look dull. However, it’s essential to use a mild exfoliating product, as harsh scrubs can damage and even tear the skin’s surface. I personally love to exfoliate with AHAs and BHAs (found in fruit acids) rather than using a physical scrub, as I simply pop some on some before bed and wake up with super-smooth skin.

(5) Know your ingredients

Look for products that contain:

  • Antioxidants, which fight free radicals, environmental pollutants, and other skin stressors;
  • Vitamin C, which brightens and reduces age spots;
  • Hyaluronic acid, which plumps skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines;
  • Ceramides, which keep the skin barrier intact and healthy.

A Healthy Lifestyle

In addition to using the right products, it’s also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of sleep, and avoiding smoking help you to keep your skin looking its best. Regular exercise also keeps your skin looking healthy by increasing circulation and improving elasticity.

Finally, it’s essential to remember that everyone’s skin is unique, so if you have questions about which products to use or are concerned about skin changes, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and I’ll be happy to help. With the right products and lifestyle adjustments, you can maintain healthy and youthful-looking skin in your middle years and beyond.

In addition to using the right products, it’s also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of sleep, and avoiding smoking help you to keep your skin looking its best. Usually, smoking is one of the toughest things for a person to change (since it’s an addiction after all). So it could help to consider getting vapes from Vape Town and start working towards cutting off your nicotine addiction.  Regular exercise also keeps your skin looking healthy by increasing circulation and improving elasticity.
