Designing The Perfect Outdoor Dining Area For Your Garden

Your garden has much more to offer than just being a place to look at plants and attract wildlife. It’s a functional area of your home just like any other, and providing you think outside the box, there are plenty of great ideas you can implement to bring it alive.

One of the best use cases is as an outdoor dining area for the summer. Everyone loves spending time outdoors during this season, especially if you live in a cold country most of the year, and having family meals as the sun sets can be lovely.

Of course, designing a spot like this isn’t as straightforward as simply placing a dining table outside within close proximity to the kitchen – if you want to do things right, there’s a lot to think about.

In this article, you’ll learn three key elements for designing the perfect eating area.

1. Choosing the Perfect Spot

The most fundamentally important part of this process is deciding where to situate the area. If you can, it’s usually best to have the dining space angled towards the sun, as that way, you get the most natural light as it sets.

Having the spot close to the home is also ideal, as for your own convenience, it’s best to reduce the time spent having to carry plates back and forth (though you could also consider adding a cabinet to store some key kitchen items within the space itself).

2. Getting the Furniture Right

Buying appropriate outdoor furniture can be tricky, as there are more requirements than there are for indoor pieces.

Firstly, you’ll need tables and chairs that are weather-resistant. While it’s important to cover your furniture with a waterproof tarp when not in use, it’ll still be exposed to the elements somewhat. You’ll also want UV-resistant fabrics; otherwise, they’ll degrade over time and can turn yellow.

Lastly, consider whether or not you’d like any special features. Some tables flip over to turn into a board game surface, and there are even designs that can be used to play pool.

3. Considering the Flooring

The flooring makes up a core element of the area, so it’s important to spend plenty of time going through each type of material to determine what will fit best.

Many people opt for simple wooden decking, as this is a cheap, durable option. The surface will need to be replaced at some point, however, so if you want to avoid this and would prefer to go with a more premium choice, you can get porcelain paving slabs online that look great for this sort of space.

Wrapping Up

The above elements represent the most important things you’ll need to think about when designing somewhere to eat outside. You might also want to add some kind of roof to the area if you plan on using it later on in the year, or if you’d like to install other elements that need protecting besides your table and chairs.

Whatever style you choose, though, you should have enough to get underway.
