Cefn Community Council continues to step up with action, not words. From protecting swifts to making futsal history, the council supports wildlife and community sport alike. As a result, residents across Cefn now see practical change on the ground.
Cefn Community Council Become “Swift Champions”
Cefn Community Council is celebrating after becoming “Swift Champions”. The council installed eight swift nest boxes at the back of the George Edwards Hall. North Wales Wildlife Trust delivered the project in partnership with Wrexham Council. The Welsh Government funded the work through the Local Places for Nature grant.
Swifts arrive from Africa each summer to breed. However, their numbers have fallen sharply in recent decades. Modern building work has reduced the nesting cavities they rely on. In Wales, numbers have dropped by around 76% since 1995.
Craig Wade, Living Landscapes Project Officer at North Wales Wildlife Trust, said: “Swifts are the sound of summer, but they’re running out of places to nest. These boxes give them a safe home to return to after their long migration. It’s brilliant to see Cefn Community Council taking real action for nature.”

Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe said: “Swifts can hit around 70mph and spend much of their lives on the wing, yet they’re being pushed out because nesting spaces are vanishing. We’re proud to be doing something practical here in Cefn.”
Council Chairman Mr Phil Vaughan added: “This project will make a real difference for years to come. We’re proud that Cefn is stepping up for wildlife.”
Residents can report swift sightings through Cofnod’s Swift Recovery page. Therefore, the council hopes to build a clearer picture of local swift activity.
Cefn Community Council & Active Wrexham Make Welsh Futsal History
Schools from across the Cefn area gathered at Plas Madoc Leisure Centre for the Cefn Community Council #StayOnSide All-Girls Schools Futsal Tournament. Andrew Ruscoe delivered the event in partnership with Active Wrexham’s Liam Jones. In addition, North Wales Police’s PACT Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund supported the tournament.
Pupils from five local schools competed throughout a highly competitive day. The overall winners were Ysgol Cefn Mawr. As a result, the school became only the second girls’ school in Wrexham to win the futsal title. Last year’s winners were Ysgol Acrefair.

Organisers awarded individual honours for Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament. Chairman Councillor Phil Vaughan presented the trophy and medals.
Pre-tournament futsal taster sessions helped pupils arrive confident and prepared. Organisers also thanked Wrexham Council’s Play and Youth Service and funding partners for their support.
