Introduction

This year, the theme of the Open is ‘creativity during lockdown’. To this end, the response to this theme has been inspiring, demonstrating the invention and resilience shown by artists from across Wrexham, Wales and the United Kingdom.

They received submissions from over 350 artists who each provided three artworks for consideration. Three judges then selected a range of works that not only fitted the theme of the exhibition, but also complemented each other and created a coherent display.

The judges making the selection were:

Lesley James – Winner of Wrexham Open 2018 Judges’ Prize
Katy McCall – Learning Manager at Manchester Art Gallery
Ffion Rhys – Curator, Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Together, the judges agreed on a selection of 117 artworks from 102 artists.
