Wales Comic Con: A Huge Success

Historia Normannis Team of Wrexham

A two-day comic book and film fan convention celebrating pop culture, film and television returned to Wrexham this September.

“Homecoming”

In a nod to the recent Spiderman movie, Wales Comic Con took over Wrexham University’s campus for their sold-out ‘Homecoming’ event. Visitors had the chance to meet some of the stars of popular television series Red Dwarf, Dr Who and Game of Thrones.

There were several prominent panellists for the day, including Amanda Abbington, Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf), Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Femi Taylor, Dan Starkey, Patricia Quinn, Terence Maynard and Gareth David-Lloyd.

Q&A Panels

The question and answer panels allowed attendees to ask their favourite actors about their experiences and on-screen and career highlights.

Attendees were also presented with photo-ops and autograph opportunities with their favourite celebrities from popular media. Merchandise was available for guests to purchase amongst the event’s many stalls.

Among the more unusual but popular attractions this year were free live wrestling events. These were put on by Professional Championship Wrestling stars over the course of the two days.

The event saw the return of Wales Comic Con fan favourites, such as the Cosplay Masquerade. This gives participants a chance to exhibit their own costumes and pay homage to their favourite icons.

Formed in 2009, Comic Con has proven to be one of Wrexham’s most popular events on the calendar. It has an estimated attendance of around 10,000 this year.

An Amazing Weekend

“Just got home from an amazing weekend at #WalesComicCon in Wrexham!” said one Twitter (or X) user. “What an event! It was fabulous to see so many people come together to celebrate art, culture and media!”.

The popular convention temporarily moved from Wrexham University to Telford International Centre back in 2019 but made its anticipated return to North Wales in August 2022.

This year, a second event is set to be held in Telford from 18th to 19th November. A statement from the team confirming the news read: “We were pleased to be able to return once again for another fun-filled event that the family can enjoy celebrating great art, media and pop-culture as part of one fantastic Comic- Con-shaped package.

“It’s an exciting time for us as we can now bring you three unique events each year through our Wales Comic Con and Telford Takeover brands”.

Pre-orders for tickets are currently available for the Telford event, featuring guest appearances from Joe Keery, Jamie Campbell Bower, Warwick Davis, Jenna Coleman, Bernard Hill and Jack Ryder. Tickets range from General Entry, Priority Entry, Weekend Pass, Kids Pass, VIP and VIP Platinum. All of which cover single-day and weekend options.
