The Wrexham County Council’s Business and Investment team held the Elevate Your Business in Wrexham 2024 conference at the Ramada Hotel a few weeks ago.
Diverse Local Businesses
The event formed a crucial part of the council’s ongoing work to generate help for Wrexham business. It brought together a diverse range of local companies while also providing presentations from some of the county’s most influential business
presences.
The UK Government supported the conference via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. This fund is central to the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and aims to provide £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025. A Packed Agenda
Compèred by Jon Cannock-Edwards, head of marketing and business development at The Uncommon Practice, the conference featured a personal greeting from Nigel Williams, lead for Economy, Business and Tourism at Wrexham Council.
First up was Wrexham Council’s Chief Executive, Ian Bancroft, who showcased the council’s ongoing work towards creating
favourable conditions for business growth in Wrexham.
Four Speakers
We then heard from four inspiring speakers representing a crosssection of local businesses. Taking the stage were Caroline
Platt from Llay-based Platts Agriculture, Lisa Bellis and Matt Gallop from The Very Group’s Wrexham fulfilment and logistics
site, Mike McCarthy, owner of The McCarthy Group palletised freight distribution service and, last but not least, John Droog and Mel Whitley from Marlin Industries based on the industrial estate.
Craig Weeks, Director of Operations at JCB Transmissions, then talked about how the company had partnered with Careers Wales and inspired many young people to pursue a career in construction. He also introduced a new initiative called Wrexham Leadership Alliance.
This exciting new body will promote Wrexham businesses and allow member organisations to share information and explore
collaborative working opportunities. It will also look to work with educational institutions to nurture and attract talent and innovation. It is also worth mentioning that the alliance will promote net zero strategies to support the Environment Social
and Governance Agenda.
These presentations preceded the highly-anticipated keynote speech by Christian Majgaard, former Head of Global Brand and
Business Development at LEGO. Christian focused on how he had guided LEGO through 25 years of different challenges
and had been instrumental in the introduction of LEGOLAND® parks, LEGO Mindstorms® robots, and the Harry Potter® license.
The day also included a prize draw with offers from local companies such as Hotel Wrexham, and then finished with a buffet lunch and networking opportunities. You can see a video synopsis of the day’s events at wrexham.gov.uk/elevate.
