Exploring Wrexham with Your Dog This Spring – April in Wrexham brings blooming landscapes and milder days – perfect for a jolly with your puppies and older dogs.

Three Local Gems

If you’re itching to get out and about, three local gems – Erddig Parkland, Minera Lead Mines, and Alyn Waters Country Park – offer scenic trails, fresh air, and plenty of fun for the dogs.

Here’s your guide to a dog-friendly day out, complete with parking tips and spots to refuel.

Erddig Parkland: A Historic Haven

Start your month with a trip to Erddig, a National Trust gem just south of Wrexham town centre. This 1,200-acre estate is a dog walker’s paradise, with riverside paths, wooded trails, and the quirky “cup and saucer” waterfall to sniff out. Dogs can roam off-lead in designated zones (check signs for details), making it ideal for a springtime romp. The parkland’s free to explore, though the hall and gardens have entry fees if you fancy a peek.

Parking: You’ve got options here. The main car park off the A5152 (signed from Junction 3 of the A483) is free for National Trust members or £3 for the day. Alternatively, park for free at Felin Puleston, a handy spot near the estate’s edge—just a short walk to the trails. Arrive early either way – April weekends fill up fast.

Café Option: The Hayloft Restaurant on-site serves hot meals, cakes, and dog-friendly ice cream. Grab a coffee to-go or settle in the tea garden for a post-walk treat. Note: only assistance dogs are allowed inside.

Minera Lead Mines: Tranquil Trails With a Past

Next, venture five miles west to Minera Lead Mines and Country Park. This peaceful spot blends industrial history with natural beauty, offering woodland walks and the Clywedog Trail for longer treks. Dogs will love bounding through the open spaces, though for safety’s sake, keep them on a lead near the old mine buildings. It’s a quieter escape, perfect for a reflective April stroll.

Parking: The free car park off B5426 is spacious, though parts are occasionally closed off. There’s still ample room, and it’s an excellent base for mountain trails if your pup’s up for an adventure.

Cafe Option: Pop into Tyn Y Capel in Minera, the nearest dog-friendly spot for refreshments. This cosy pub offers hearty meals and a warm welcome for muddy paws—ideal for unwinding after your walk.

Alyn Waters Country Park: Riverside Rambles

Round off your April outings at Alyn Waters, Wrexham’s largest country park, split by the River Alyn into Gwersyllt and Llay sides. Both offer woodland and riverside trails, with the Gwersyllt side boasting a visitor centre and the Llay side featuring a playground for the kids if they come with you. Dogs are welcome everywhere, though leads are required in signposted areas – plenty of space remains for a good sniff.

Parking: Gwersyllt’s car park (off Mold Road, A541) costs £1 daily via JustPark or cash; Llay’s (off Llay New Road) is the same. Season tickets (£50/year) cover both, plus other local parks.

Café Option: Caffi Cyfle at Gwersyllt serves homemade cakes and hot drinks with dog bowls and treats on hand. It’s a cosy stop to recharge.

Get Out This April!

With spring in full swing, Wrexham’s green spaces beckon. Whether it’s Erddig’s grand estate, Minera’s tranquil trails, or Alyn Waters’ riverside charm, your dog will thank you for the outing. Lace up your walking boots, grab your pup, and make the most of April’s longer days!
