Florida man joins Acrefair litter‑pick – Volunteers, including pupils from Ysgol Rhosymedre, have been rolling up their sleeves in Acrefair for the village’s monthly litter‑pick. Adam Alfi, Chairman of FC United of Wrexham Futsal Club, made the 4,300-mile journey from Florida just to support the initiative.

A True Community Collaboration

Working side‑by‑side for just over an hour, the team regularly fill around a dozen bags of rubbish, leaving Acrefair’s streets and green verges noticeably cleaner. The clean‑ups have been a true community collaboration. Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe has coordinated the effort, receiving on-the-ground support from Barbara Lloyd from Cefn Mawr Museum, Lucy Gregory of the #StayOnSide Litter Pickers, Councillor Paul Blackwell, Tesco Community Champion David Roden, Chairman of Cefn Community Council, Mr Phil Vaughan and Rhosymedre pupils, including nine-year-old Jacob Smith.

Mr Alfi, whose club has forged strong ties with the area despite his trans‑Atlantic base, called the experience “inspiring and humbling” and pledged further involvement in local projects.

“Incredibly Moving”

Chairman Phil Vaughan captured the mood of the day when he said, “This is what community is all about. People from every walk of life, young and old, local and international, came together because they care. Seeing our schoolchildren filling bags of litter alongside someone who’s flown halfway across the world for them is incredibly moving. It proves that the values we hold in Cefn reach far beyond our borders.”

The litter pick is just part of a wider programme of community action events across Cefn and the #StayOnSide initiative. This project promotes civic pride, reduces antisocial behaviour, and brings generations together. Organisers say the next community clean-up will take place in early June, and everyone is warmly invited to join.

Cefn Community Council did its first monthly litter pick of 2025 with a typical display of community spirit and youth leadership. Nine-year-old Jacob Smith from Ysgol Rhosymedre proved one of the most popular participants.
