Theatr Clwyd’s September line-up brings an Olivier-winning comedy, a reimagined Austen classic and a new murder-mystery thriller to the Flintshire stage.
A New Comedy Thriller Opens the Season
Meanwhile, The Other Side of Murder launches its UK tour at Theatr Clwyd from 4 to 12 September. Rufus Hound stars as TV medium Darius Devine, alongside Susie Blake as Miriam. Aisha Jawando, Beth Lilly and Andy McLeod complete the main cast in this new comedy thriller from Torben Betts.
The story follows a cosy family dinner that quickly spirals into ghostly visitations and explosive revelations. As tensions rise, the line between performance and reality begins to shatter, building to a twist few will predict.
Handbagged Imagines the Queen and Thatcher
Moira Buffini’s Olivier Award-winning comedy Handbagged runs from 15 to 26 September. The play imagines the conversations between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher during their weekly meetings between 1979 and 1990. Pandora Clifford, Liz Garland and Alexandra Mathie lead a cast that also includes Deven Modha, Simon Darwen and Meriel Schofield.
Director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder said she felt thrilled to bring the story to life. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with this brilliant company of actors to bring to life some of the most prominent figures from recent history,” she said.
Pride & Prejudice, Reimagined by the Servants
From 29 September to 3 October, Theatr Clwyd stages Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of), a five-star West End retelling written and directed by Isobel McArthur. The show tells Austen’s story through the eyes of the household’s servants, set to a pop-karaoke soundtrack, and reduces 119 named characters to an essential 18, played by just five actors.
McArthur wanted to restore the novel’s humour to the stage. “The original book is a riot,” she said. “So, this adaptation is in the spirit of Austen herself and the way she writes. It’s funny, feminist and front footed.” Audiences, she added, need no prior knowledge of Austen to enjoy the show.
