Erddig Nordic Walking Group by Gareth Lloyd (Secretary)

We are a group of people with interest in promoting health, well-being and mindfulness through Nordic walking. There is a particular technique to Nordic walking that involves using specific walking poles. Nordic walking also incorporates a distinctive style that uses 90% of the body’s muscles.

Forty Percent More Effective

While walking is one of the best forms of exercise, Nordic walking is 40% more effective as a form of exercise. It is similar to using a cross-trainer in a gym, however, unlike a gym, Nordic walking takes place in the open air, and you can take in the beauty of our local area.

Erddig Nordic Walkers (ENW) walk whatever the weather three times a week and throughout the year. Although our base is at Erddig Hall, we have evolved our walks and now cover various locations throughout the Wrexham area, such as Trevor Basin, Rossett, Holt and Minera. Our walks are mainly circular, starting from a suitable parking spot with facilities and returning to the same place. Walks are graded, vary from 2½-5 miles and are ideal for all abilities in terms of distance and duration.

We risk-assess our walks, and our walk leaders have trained to lead Nordic Walks. We carry first-aid equipment, have first aiders on all walks, and all leaders carry two-way radios, so there is constant communication between the group. The safety and security of members are paramount.

Developing Friendships

While Nordic walking is a key feature of the group’s activities, ENW is a solid social group. The group also provides a secure environment to develop friendships. There is a social at a local café or hostelry in the area following our walks, and more often than not, the venue’s car park will be our start and end point.

The group also holds a variety of social functions: Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Quiz Nights and Christmas Party, and offer longer walks, eg Mawddach Trail, Canal Boat and Powys Castle Walk.

We walk on the following days:

Monday: 9.30am for 10am
Wednesday: 12.30pm for 1pm
Saturday: 9.30am for 10am

The group holds regular new member welcome sessions and provide complete instruction. We supply all equipment although new members need to wear suitable walking shoes/boots/trainers and bring waterproofs in case of rain.

There is a voluntary contribution of £1 per walk, and we use this towards the purchase of equipment, subsidy for coach travel, training for leaders and members, and charitable donations.
