Welcome to our Cefn community update for April 2026. This month, we highlight a new drive to protect local hedgehogs and the launch of an inclusive community fitness class.

Hedgehog Heroes

Sue Jurkojc, a local resident, has been named Cefn’s first “hedgehog hero.” She recently received a hedgehog house kit as part of a community effort to save the species across Wrexham County Borough.

The Hedgehog Ambassador programme, run by Cefn Community Council, presented the kit to Sue. This initiative is part of a wider local nature project. Furthermore, it receives support from the Local Places for Nature fund, Wrexham Council, and the Welsh Government.

Specifically, the campaign focuses on protecting hedgehogs from habitat loss and road danger. These animals once thrived in our gardens. However, they now rely on connected outdoor spaces to survive and breed. Because hedgehogs travel long distances at night, coordinated community action is essential.

Declining Numbers

Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe warns that the situation is urgent. In fact, hedgehog numbers in some rural areas have fallen sharply since 2000. The species is now classed as vulnerable to extinction in Great Britain.

Fortunately, safe gardens can help the population recover. The new house kits give residents a practical way to support local wildlife. These boxes provide sheltered spaces where hedgehogs can rest and nest. Additionally, organisers say even small changes in your garden can make a big difference.

Cefn East Councillor Derek Wright praised the project. He noted that the initiative demonstrates strong community leadership. In his view, local action is the best way to support nature.

How to Get Involved

Sue Jurkojc is excited to welcome hedgehogs into her garden. She feels that being involved in wildlife conservation is incredibly rewarding.

Consequently, Cefn Community Council is encouraging more residents, schools, and groups to join the campaign. Free hedgehog house kits are currently available. If you want to take part, please contact the council for more information.

Keep Fit With Kate

A brand-new fitness class launched in March, and it offers more than just a workout. Keep Fit With Kate started on Thursday, 12th March, at George Edwards Hall. The class aims to bring people together and boost wellbeing. Moreover, it helps tackle social isolation through movement and connection.

The weekly sessions run from 9:15 am to 10:00 am. They are designed to be inclusive for all abilities. Whether you are a regular exerciser or a complete beginner, you will find a friendly atmosphere.

Meet Kate

Kate Blackmore recently moved to the Cefn area. She is passionate about making a difference through fitness.

“I am really excited to start this new class and make new connections with the community,” Kate said.

Andrew Ruscoe also welcomed the initiative. He explained that these sessions help residents stay active and avoid sedentary lifestyles. In addition, the rent from the classes helps the council maintain the historic George Edwards Hall as a community hub.

Investing in Our Spaces

Attracting new activities is a key goal for the council. Because the hall is hosting more sessions, the council successfully secured a grant from the Shared Prosperity Fund. This money was used to upgrade the toilets, ensuring a better experience for all visitors.

Chairman Mr. Phil Vaughan added that supporting small organisations is a priority. By helping Kate launch her class, the council generates the income needed to preserve the hall for future generations.

Join a Class

The class costs £5 per session, but the first session is free. You only need to wear trainers and bring a fitness mat.

In a time when loneliness is increasing, Keep Fit With Kate reminds us that local groups can strengthen both our health and our social bonds.
