AVOW Recruit Community Response Volunteers

The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW)’s Volunteer Centre launched a digital campaign for Volunteers’ Week last month. Volunteers’ Week 2021 takes on two special meanings this year. Firstly, to thank the organisations and volunteers who have gone above and beyond during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

There have been many challenges for the organisation. They have moved swiftly to introduce online activities and many hundreds of people have responded to local needs. AVOW itself have recruited nearly 1,000 volunteers over the Covid-19 pandemic. These people have fulfilled various roles in the community, including shopping, pharmacy pick-up, dog walkers and befriending services. In addition, thousands of people at street level volunteered as “good neighbours” to help those around them.

John Leece Jones

Their second dedication this month goes to the late Chairman and Trustee of AVOW, John Leece Jones, who sadly passed away last month. John Gallanders, Chief Officer AVOW, paid tribute to John. He acknowledged many of the different roles that John Leece has held in Wrexham, including Governor of Coleg Cambria, Chair and Governor of Rofft CP and Tanyfron CP, Paes-y-Pant and Wrexham League of Friends. John also had roles with Wrexham CAB, Gresford Memorial Hall, Gresford Community Council and Non-Executive Director of North East Wales Health Trust.

About AVOW

AVOW connects voluntary and community organisations and activities in Wrexham. Furthermore, it coordinates advice, information, financial and community development support services for charities and community groups. To that end, AVOW can easily signpost individuals to appropriate sources of support. They also deliver high-quality services to carers, citizens with particular needs and those seeking employment.
