Calon FM, based in Wrexham city centre, celebrated their relaunch earlier this year. Now, their future is secure for five years after regulator Ofcom granted a licence extension.
An Exciting Year
It comes after an exciting year for Calon FM. They have extended Welsh Language and Portuguese programming and covered key events in Wrexham and the surrounding areas. These events include Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, football fan zones, St David’s Day, Wrexham Feast, Bellevue Christmas Light Switch On and last weekend’s hugely successful Christmas Market in Queen’s Square.
They are also on the shortlist as a finalist for two national awards. Calon FM started this year with 23 volunteers and has expanded to nearly 40. They’ve also welcomed long-term placements from Wrexham Glyndŵr University and worked with Careers Wales to help local schoolchildren and support the new curriculum.
The Heart of Everything
Business Development Manager Allan Longshadow said: “We put the Wrexham community at the heart of everything we do. It is great that Ofcom has recognised our importance in the local community. We are proud of our volunteers and delighted that more can work in radio.” Production Manager Arran Hodges added: “We’re grateful to have received support from local businesses and residents since our relaunch last year. We’ve worked hard to bring new experiences to our listeners. Our focus going into 2023 is now to expand our programming further.”
