Setting your goals for the new year is the easy part. The real challenge is in seeing them through. Here are five tips to make sure you get off to the right start:
1. Write it down
The simple act of committing pen to paper and writing down your goals turns them into something tangible and definite – the starting point of success. Whether you prefer to write your resolutions on a noticeboard for all to see or keep them to yourself in a private notebook is up to you. Find yourself a quiet moment now and start jotting.
2. Mind your language
The language you use to set out your goals is crucial to success. Consider the difference between these two statements:
- “This year, I would like to try and get my weight down by around 15 kilos.”
- “In 2020, I am going to lose 15 kilos.”
Don’t be vague – make bold, direct statements about what you are going to achieve and don’t be afraid to be ambitious.
3. Start NOW
Writing down your goal is great, but if you really want to succeed in your goals for 2020, you need to start NOW. It’s much easier to see something through once you’ve started it, even if life does get in the way. Things you have not yet started all too often fall prey to procrastination.
4. Take ownership
Ultimately, your personal goals need to be your thing. If somebody wants to join you for part or all of that journey, that’s great. Don’t be dependent on anybody other than yourself, however. Take a deep breath and accept full responsibility for your journey to success.
5. Be strategic
With a strategic approach, you can break your goals down into achievable, measurable milestones which allow you to monitor your progress and help you to stay on track. Even if the big goal is ambitious and daunting, the right strategy will keep you moving in the right direction. You’ll also be able to look back at how far you have come, which can help to keep you motivated when the going gets tough.
