Vault 33 on High Street, Wrexham

We recently paid a visit to Vault 33 on High Street to find out a little more about one of the city centre’s most attractive-looking bars and its amazing, unique mural.

A Potted History

Ex-Wrexham player Neil Roberts is one of the team of three owners, and he was our host, showing us around the bar while providing us with a potted history of its premises. He also wanted to highlight how supportive Mickey Thomas and Joey Jones had been throughout the new venture’s lifetime.

The building was originally a bank and was constructed in 1912. Amazingly, the original vaults are still present, and with the address being 33 High Street, the team decided to amalgamate the two names and came up with Vault 33.

The high ceilings of the bar give it a relaxed and spacious feel, and the guys have spared no expense with the on-trend décor. However, your eye is inevitably drawn towards the large mural towards the back of
the bar, occupying the whole of the passageway that leads to the rear.

Knock-on Effect

As Neil explains, “The reason we’re here is in large part due to the knock-on effect of the success the football club has had recently. We wanted to reference that as well as creating a tribute to everything Wales, North Wales and Wrexham.”

The mural features a mixture of local architecture, events, historical views and different Welsh footballing icons through the ages. You can see the old gateway to the Acton Estate with the four greyhounds. Andy Morrell holding the 2013 FA Trophy, Kevin Russell, Steve Watkin and “The King” Karl Connolly also feature.

Iconic Line-Up

The amazing Soames’ brewery chimney on Yorke Street/Mount Street catches the eye, as does the iconic Welsh line-up that beat England 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground in 1984.

A newspaper announcing the Gresford Mining Disaster is a stark reminder of the darkest day in Wrexham history. Another moving touch is a tribute to the late Gary Speed, with recent history also covered in images of Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Jordan Davies, Lili Jones and Paul Mullin. In fact, local girl Lili opened the bar almost exactly a year ago.

Words don’t really do justice to the majesty of the mural, so pop on down to the bar and make yourself known to Neil and the guys. You’re sure of a warm welcome.
